CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — A united, well-organized opposition led by a youthful state governor gave President Hugo Chavez the race of his life Sunday as Venezuelans turned out in huge numbers for a presidential election on the country's socialist direction.

Tensions rose in the bitterly divided petroleum-exporting nation while an undetermined number of voting stations remained open after the official 6 p.m. closing time, with not a single result announced more than three hours later.

PUERTO CABELLO, Venezuela (AP) — Violence broke out at an opposition campaign event in Venezuela on Wednesday as supporters of President Hugo Chavez blocked a road and a campaign truck was torched. Both sides hurled rocks.

Hundreds of Chavez supporters in red shirts blocked a main road near the airport in the town of Puerto Cabello. A truck used by the campaign of opposition candidate Henrique Capriles was on fire, and a motorcycle was also torched.
