  • JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's vice premier says the Palestinians would violate their peace accords with Israel by seeking recognition of an independent state of Palestine at the United Nations.

Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio on Wednesday that Israel would "have to take steps to make it clear that there will be heavy price" if the Palestinians go ahead with their plan to petition the U.N. General Assembly for statehood on Nov. 29.

He said it would be a "flagrant" breach of the accords of the early 1990s but stopped short of saying they would be rendered void.

  • An Israeli tank in a firing position in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights overlooking the Syrian village of Bariqa, Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. The Israeli military says "Syrian mobile artillery" was hit after responding to stray mortar fire from its northern neighbor. The incident marked the second straight day that Israel has responded to fire from Syria that does not appear to be aimed at Israeli targets, nonetheless Israel has promised a tough response if the fire continues.

The spillover has raised concerns that the nearly 20-month-long conflict between Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime and rebels trying to topple him could endanger the entire Middle East.
