BANGKOK (AP) — The price of oil slid Monday as investors grew worried about possible fallout from a plan to pay for a bailout for cash-strapped Cyprus by slapping a tax on deposits in the country's banks.
Benchmark oil for April delivery was down 97 cents to $92.48 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 42 cents to end at $93.45 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.
Asian stock markets and the euro tumbled as a plan to fund a bailout for Cyprus by taxing its bank deposits raised worries it could spark an exodus of capital from fragile European economies.
Euro zone ministers struck a deal on Saturday to hand Cyprus a bailout worth 10 billion euros ($13 billion) to stave off bankruptcy. Under the programme, the island’s debt should fall to 100 percent of economic output by 2020.
Here are the outlines of the financial package:
Nicosia will impose a 9.9 percent one-off levy on deposits above 100,000 euros in Cypriot banks…
