James Erik Abels is the founder of TMM, a software start-up based in Manhattan. A former media reporter for Forbes and Pearson’s mergermarket newswire, Abels created TMM to update and adapt broadcast television’s business model to the Internet. While working on it, he enlisted the aid of a technical co-founder, built a Web video news service (TMMnews.com) for market research, and was a New Jersey Technology Council panelist on the future of media and technology. Abels is a lawyer and lives in Manhattan.

Daniel J. Gervais is the Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University Law School and Director of the Vanderbilt Intellectual Property Program, where he also serves as Faculty Director of the Master’s Program. He is Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed Journal of World Intellectual Property and editor of www.tripsagreement.net. Prior to joining Vanderbilt, he was the Acting Dean, University Research Chair in Intellectual Property and Osler Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa (Common Law Section). Before he joined the Academy, Prof. Gervais was successively Legal Officer at the GATT (now WTO); Head of Section at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO); and Vice-President, International of Massachusetts-based Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC). He also served as consultant to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris and the author of several books, book chapters and articles published in six different languages. Dr. Gervais studied computer science and law at McGill University and the University of Montreal, where he also obtained LL.B. and LL.M. degrees, and received several awards. In 2012, he became the first law professor in North America elected to the Academy of Europe.
