Undersea boost coming for Cambodia’s internet

Cambodia’s growing internet usage is about to get a big boost from China. On Wednesday, Phnom Penh signed a contract with China’s Cambodia Fiber Optic Communication Network for the firm to invest $69.7 million in building and operating high-bandwidth submarine cables and a landing station in the country’s coastal southwestern province.

The Asia-Africa-Europe-1 cable currently links 19 countries, and the branch to Cambodia is expected to be operational by the end of 2017. Having its own dedicated link — meaning Cambodia will no longer need to go through Vietnam or Thailand – will result in faster and cheaper internet access.

Currently Cambodia has some 6.5 million internet users, out of a population of 15 million. However…
