Odds are strong that you remember social media hashtags for all the wrong reasons. But a new viral challenge, going by #TrashTag, is making the headlines with some serious impact on the ground.

As part of the Trashtag Challenge, individuals or people in groups, pick a filthy site, clean it up and post the before and after images on their social media channels, encouraging others to do the same and spread the word, writes the BBC. The idea has really caught the imagination of tens of thousands of people, who have shared their images mopping up trash on beaches, roads, and elsewhere.

Besides, making our surroundings healthier and more pleasing to eyes, the challenge draws attention to the menace of plastic litter as well. The hashtag has been around for quite some time, initially popularized in 2015 by UCO, a Canadian brand of outdoor essentials, Green Matters.
