Amid outrage, after a damning report recommended investigating Myanmar’s top military officials for the massacre of Rohingya Muslims, outgoing U.N. human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein said the country’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi should have stepped down over the onslaught on the ethnic minority.
Hussein said Suu Kyi, the most influential democratic figure in the Buddhist-majority nation, should not have turned her back on the Rohingyas as the army launched a fierce ethnic cleansing campaign in the name of fight against terrorism, reports the BBC.
Hussein’s comments follow a recent U.N. report that accused the Burmese army of carrying out mass killings and gang rapes of Rohingyas with “genocidal intent,” an allegation repeatedly dismissed by Myanmar, notes Al Jazeera.
