Climate change turning trees bulky but frail

With the window of growing seasons getting longer because of climate change, trees at some places enjoy an extra three weeks to bulk up but not without a price, claims a study at the Technical University of Munich in Germany.

The research by forest scientist Hans Pretzsch and his colleagues found that trees in the forests of central Europe are getting bigger but their wood density has dropped by 8 percent to 12 percent, a degradation they attribute to the combined effects of pollution from auto exhausts and farms, reports Science.

The struggle to keep pace with climate change arises as ecosystems have begun to change on a human timescale now while plants migrate on the geological timescale of landforms, prompting a disturbing question – should we relocate trees to save them from climate change, notes Mother Jones.
