German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to hold a crisis meeting with interior minister Horst Seehofer, who has threatened to quit the coalition government over Berlin’s latest deal with the EU to tackle immigration.

A tug of war between Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Seehofer’s Christian Social Union (CSU) casts doubt on the future of a fragile coalition government, and experts link the row over migration to upcoming state elections where the far-right anti-migrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party maintains an upper hand, writes the BBC.

For the moment, Seehofer’s resignation would be a hiatus for cornered Merkel, who has been battling opposition from within her government since assuming office, reports The Guardian.
