The head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has warned that a growing discord between the U.S. under President Donald Trump and its European allies threatens the transatlantic relationship and military alliance.

The remarks by Stoltenberg come on the heels of Trump’s public jibes at German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open door policy for immigrants, notes The Guardian. Stoltenberg, who is due to meet British Prime Minister Theresa May in Downing Street on Thursday, stressed the importance of preserving security cooperation at a time when political ties between Europe and North America are under strain.

Trump’s transactional mindset, instead of finding common grounds of mutual interest with European allies, jeopardizes transatlantic relationships, writes Houston Chronicle.
