In the wake of reports narrating the plight of Mexican children, who are split from their families for illegal immigration into the U.S., First Lady Melania Trump has called on the lawmakers to introduce reforms in the controversial policy.

Almost 2,000 children have been separated from their families and lodged in detention centers since the zero-tolerance policy on illegal immigrants was announced by attorney general Jeff Sessions, writes The Guardian.

The former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush echoed Melania Trump’s views as she slammed the Trump administration for “cruel” and “immoral” policy on illegal border crossings, notes the BBC. Secretary of homeland security, Kirstjen Neilsen, dismissed “misreporting” by the press, as it defended putting minors in temporary custody to protect them from abuse in jails.
