Shrinking natural habitats and diseases pushed mountain gorillas to the brink of extinction not long ago, but a series of conservation efforts have turned the fortunes for the animal.

The dwindling population of mountain gorillas is on the path of recovery, eventually hitting 1,000-mark from 400 back in 2012, notes Green Matters.

While the progress brings a smile to the faces of conservationists, mountain gorillas are still on the critically endangered list, facing threat from poachers and human encroachments in their homeland in central Africa, writes ENCA.com.
