Guatemala volcano: 75 dead; fresh eruption stalls rescue

A fresh eruption in Guatemala’s Fuego volcano on Tuesday disrupted rescue efforts as the death toll from the catastrophic explosion on Sunday crossed 75 while 192 people remain missing, according to official figures released by the national disaster agency.

Tuesday’s explosion caught rescue workers off guard after volcanologists had predicted “no imminent eruption over the next few days,” writes Al Jazeera.

Heart-wrenching scenes and stories continued to surface from the ash-covered villages, virtually wiped off the map by the disaster that gave locals little time to run for cover and execute any emergency training, notes the BBC.
