The Syrian government and its ally Russia have accused Israel of carrying out deadly air strikes at the Tiyas airbase east of the city of Homs, which killed at least 14 people on Monday.

The Russian military claimed that the Syrian air defense systems shot down five of the eight missiles fired by Israeli F-15 jets while three of them hit Tiyas, notes The Guardian. The air strike at the airbase comes amid global outrage over alleged chemical attack on the Syrian rebel-held town of Douma.

Israel, which has admitted to attacking targets in Syria several times in the past, seeks to root out any Iranian presence in the war-torn nation from where Tehran pumps funds and weapons to Lebanese Shia militant group Hezbollah, an enemy of Israel, writes the BBC.
