Starbucks is running the NextGen Cup Challenge, which sets prize money of $10 million for anyone who can design more sustainable coffee cups for the company. The effort is aimed at creating cups that are 100 percent recyclable and compostable, unlike the current ones.

Starbucks estimates that nearly 6 billion coffee cups, with 10% post-consumer recycled fiber, are being tossed out of its stores every year, notes CNN.

Developing an eco-friendly coffee cup has proved an uphill task until now not only for the type of paper but also for the inner waterproof lining, writes USA Today.
