Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, embroiled in the country’s most explosive political financing scandal, has been detained by the police over allegations that his 2007 campaign accepted millions of euros in illegal funding from the then Libyan regime.

This is the first time the French police have questioned the ex-president since the investigation was launched in 2013, notes The Guardian.

Sarkozy faces a separate trial for manipulating the spending figures for his re-election bid in 2012, when the leader earned the reputation of a political showman by organizing lavish rallies and U.S.-style stadium gigs.
