Can there be an alternative source of energy for solar panels? A breakthrough by a team of Chinese researchers suggests so. The scientists have developed a hybrid solar panel that can harvest latent energy of raindrops, delivering power output even in rainy, overcast conditions.

The new solar panels are based on the triboelectric effect, a property by virtue of which a material exhibits an electrical charge when in contact with a different material, writes Inhabitat.

Even though similar devices have been produced in the past, it’s the simplicity of the latest model which brings the concept of harvesting energy during various weather conditions close to reality, notes Science Daily.
