The idea of re-transplanting a face after chronic rejection in a recipient may sound audacious to many but a team of French surgeons thought otherwise as they created a medical history by performing the world’s first-ever double face transplant.

The outcome of the highly risky and complicated surgery can be gauged only after a few weeks, and if successful, the operation will rekindle hope for patients suffering from chronic rejections of their first graft, notes The Telegraph.

Face transplant operations are rare, with only 40 cases recorded across the world so far, writes The Futurism.
