Germany: Boost for Merkel with coalition talks "deal"

The coalition talks between German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the Social Democrats (SPD) showed signs of proceeding to the next stage on Friday as politicians from the two parties ironed out differences over wide-ranging issues, paving way for formal negotiations.

Amid a prolonged period of political uncertainty and doubts over the future of Merkel’s leadership, Germany has seen its clout weakening in international affairs, writes Reuters.

If the formal coalition negotiations fail, Merkel will have no other choice but to form a minority government or call new elections, notes The Guardian
