North Korea has agreed it will send a delegation of athletes, officials, journalists and supporters to the Winter Olympic Games in the South, a historic breakthrough that came as the two arch-rivals held the first high-level talks in two years on Tuesday.

In the first session of the talks, the South proposed that the athletes from the two Korean nations march together at the opening ceremony while also pushing for family reunions for people separated by the Korean War, writes the BBC.

Skeptical of the sports diplomacy, Katina Adams, spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department, said it remains to be seen if the talks are a genuine gesture towards normalization of ties and restoration of peace in the Korean region, notes The Guardian
