An experiment at a San Francisco food pantry has kicked off a new model dubbed as “Food Pharmacies,” which are on-site pantries offering fresh produce, whole grains, dairy and lean meats to patients as prescribed by their physicians.

The new system seeks to bring a change in medical community, encouraging them to focus more on observing and promoting good dietary habits instead of immediately prescribing medications, notes Peninsula Press.

The approach differs from conventional “prescription” models as people, suffering from chronic health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, get access to one-stop point to discuss nutrition, recipes, and cooking demonstrations, writes Green Matters.
