A suicide attack at an area close to both the Afghan Voice news agency and a Shia cultural center killed at least 40 people and injured 30 others on Thursday as a group of students had gathered for a discussion on the 38th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Shia community and media houses in Afghanistan have faced a string of ruthless attacks as insurgent groups, including Taliban and Islamic State, hit back after being pushed by security forces in many areas and urban centers, writes Reuters.

No group claimed responsibility for the strike but Taliban issued a statement denying its involvement, notes the BBC. A recent report by media freedom group, Reporters without Borders, found Afghanistan the most dangerous place for media workers with five professionals from the fraternity killed in 2017.
