America’s first eHighway goes live in California

California now has America’s first electrified highway, a one-mile long stretch with an overhead catenary system designed to power electric trucks as they move on selected lanes.

The new eHighway system, developed by Siemens, is a fine example of how existing port infrastructure can be augmented towards building a zero-emissions transportation model, notes Inhabitat.

While addressing the critical issue of air pollution, the system also cuts down the energy consumption in cargo movement to virtually half compared to diesel-based haulage, writes Construction Equipment. The system lowers the operating costs for trucks and also supports growing amount of freight travel.
