Democrats scored two key victories in the gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia on Tuesday, making a comeback in the first statewide elections held under the Trump regime.

The race, particularly in Virginia, was being viewed as a referendum on U.S. President Donald Trump’s governance as the victorious Democrat Ralph Northam attempted to leverage the leader’s unpopularity in the territory that was a swing state in elections last year, writes ABC News.

The results, which are also a preview to next year's midterm congressional elections, should be a reason for Republicans to worry as Democrat supporters vote in large numbers negating the legions of rural voters who backed Trump in 2016, notes the BBC.
