A team of urban designers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology revealed how human dwellings on Mars might look and sustain without any interventions from Earth.

The “Redwood Forest” habitats envisioned by the MIT team would comprise of giant greenhouse domes with intertwining underground tunnels offering private spaces and routes for occupants, notes Digital Trends.

The domes will tap local Martian resources such as ice and water, regolith (or soil), and sun, mimicking a forest in appearance and function. Earlier this year, the University of Arizona and NASA came up with a blend of biology and futuristic plant-growing architecture in their inflatable greenhouse developed for survival on the Red Planet, writes Curbed
