Sacked Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont skipped what he calls a “political trial” at Spain’s high court while other deposed members of Catalonia's regional government turned up in Madrid to face charges for spearheading the independence drive.

Prosecutors can issue an arrest order against Puigdemont, who is currently in Belgium, writes the BBC. Fourteen Catalan leaders, including Puigdemont, face charges for rebellion, sedition and misuse of funds, which carry a maximum of 30-year jail term.

Spain battles an unprecedented constitutional crisis following Catalonia’s declaration of independence while the European Union maintains a stoic silence over the crisis, notes The Guardian
