Ying Gao’s dress "swirls to life" near strangers

Montreal-based Fashion designer Ying Gao’s latest collection of robotic dresses challenges the notion that views clothing as a protective barrier.

The designer has fashioned dresses using gauzy nylon mesh and translucent thermoplastic, which “open up,” twist and curl in the presence of strangers, providing the wearer a means to emancipate, notes Dezeen.

Gao’s interactive dresses feature a fingerprint scanner planted in a wooden case that circles around the wearer’s neck. The kinetic panels swirl if a microprocessor doesn’t identify the fingerprint data received from the scanner.
