Rival Palestinian factions Hamas, Fatah “reach deal”

The Palestinian group Hamas announced on Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with rival faction Fatah, a development that paves way for a power-sharing unity government in Gaza and the West Bank.

The accord brokered by Egypt puts an end to a decade-long rift between the two factions, which have ruled Gaza and the West Bank separately after deadly clashes in 2007, writes the BBC.

The modalities of the agreement will be announced later on Thursday and are likely to be based on the 2011 Cairo agreement, which stipulated that the groups jointly form a Palestinian government to appoint the prime minister and ministerial positions, notes Al Jazeera.
