Search giant Google is launching its localized UPI-based digital payment service, called “Tez,” in India on September 18, a move aimed at capitalizing on the country’s “fast growing and super-competitive digital payment ecosystem.”

“Tez,” developed grounds up for India, comes amid reports that Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is working with a few Indian banks to build a system for financial transactions via UPI, writes Hindustan Times.

Google “Tez,” will provide mobile payment services beyond the existing ones like Google Wallet or Android Pay, notes Live Mint.
