A student’s life in rural Kenyan schools throws more challenges than customary complex equations or grammar rules. Frequent power outage is one such hurdle, but a Kenyan startup, called Strauss Energy, presents an innovative solution to drive away the darkness from the path of education.
The company has installed building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) or solar roof tiles at the Gaitheri Secondary School in Murang’a County, helping the 275-student school to maintain a reliable and cheap alternative source of power, writes Inhabitat.
Charity Wanjiku, the company’s chief operations officer, admits that the solar roof tiles, priced between $20 and $250, could be expensive for individual homes but they are a viable source of clean power for estate developers, schools and hospitals, notes Reuters.
