A Hungarian startup, Platio, has developed a modular, self-contained paving panel that can harvest both solar energy and kinetic energy, generating enough power to run the not-so-energy-demanding daily applications.

The unconventional energy producing system is made from recycled plastic and thus, doesn’t add to environmental stress at any level, writes New Atlas. The pavers easily click together and are rugged enough to withstand heavy footfall.

The company mulls potential applications for these sidewalk pavers, for example, using them as holographic “infopavement” or as a community energy storage system, notes Tree Hugger.
