Turning up the heat on what it described as “illicit Iranian actors,” the United States on Tuesday imposed fresh economic sanctions on Tehran over its ballistic missile program, a move that comes just a day after certifying the country’s compliance with nuclear deal.

In a statement, the U.S. condemned Iran’s support for the Syrian regime and groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas while also accusing the Middle East nation of fomenting war in Yemen, writes the BBC.

The new sanctions, which affect 18 entities and people in Iran, drew prompt criticism from Tehran, which described them as “one-sided and illegal.” Iran threatened it would come up with a tit-for-tat response by slapping sanctions on American natural and legal persons, notes France 24.
