Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a three-day visit to politically-tense Hong Kong amid unprecedented security lockdown as the territory marks 20th anniversary of its handover to Beijing by Britain.
Jinping, accompanied by his wife, reiterated China’s resolve to continue backing economic development in Hong Kong, adding that the “one country, two systems” will keep flourishing like the past 20 years, writes the BBC.
Several pro-democracy activist groups, including Joshua Wong and lawmaker Nathan Law, staged protests and organized rallies at an iconic sculpture on the eve of Xi’s arrival, notes The Guardian.
