MIT’s new bacteria-laden biofabric cools itself off

The researchers at MIT have crafted a “biofabric,” which carries a host of living microbial cells that sense and respond to heat and sweat, allowing the wearable to cool off an athlete’s body during workout.

Unlike conventional gymwear, which rely on microprocessors for their ventilation activity, the new fabric uses moisture-sensitive cells that are safe to touch, can be mass-produced quickly and can be engineered for multiple functionalities, notes MIT News.

For example, the technique can be used to engineer odor-release gymwear so that during long, strenuous workouts, the garment releases fragrant particles, writes New Atlas.
