The U.S. carried out a string of airstrikes last week in Shabwah governorate in central Yemen, killing 13 fighters of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (A.Q.A.P.). Without giving specific details about the military operation, U.S. Central Command said that the strikes aimed at maintaining consistent pressure on the jihadist group, which poses a significant threat to regional peace and stability.

The statement released by the U.S. military didn’t reveal the identities of those killed in the strikes made between August 24 and September 4, writes the BBC. Yemen, which has been reeling under a civil war, has struggled to rein in A.Q.A.P. militants, who have orchestrated several attacks against West.

According to an estimate by the U.N., more than 6,600 people have been killed and some 2.5 million displaced during Yemen’s civil war, which began in March 2015, reports Deutsche Welle. Forces in a Saudi-led coalition have been battling Iran-backed Shiite Houthi rebels to restore President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power after he was forced to flee to Saudi Arabia.

In a separate development, Brazilian prosecutors said that they charged Latin America’s largest gun maker, Forjas Taurus, for a deal that allegedly sent arms to the country’s civil war.
