Activists and rescue workers in the rebel-held part of Aleppo claimed that the Syrian warplanes dropped barrels containing chlorine in the Sukari area of the contested city. A medical report from one of the hospitals in the region said that more than 70 people, including 37 children and 10 women, were treated for breathing difficulties and their clothes smelled of chlorine.

The alleged assault comes as the Syrian opposition leaders gather in London on Wednesday to forge a new strategy for a political transition that could stop the five-year long bloodshed in the country, writes the BBC.

This is not the first time the Syrian government has been accused of launching a chemical attack in the war-stricken Aleppo, reports The Guardian. In August, a team of international inspectors found that the Syrian regime and Islamic State militants carried out chemical attacks in 2014 and 2015.

Releasing its 12th report on the Syrian conflict on Tuesday, the U.N. expressed serious concern over growing hostilities by the warring sides. The world body said that the progress made by a temporary truce agreement in February has been undone by an even more fierce resumption in fighting in recent weeks.
