A suicide car bomb struck an army camp in Yemen’s port city of Aden, killing at least 40 military personnel and injuring several others on Monday. Security forces and officials have been a primary target in the port city, which serves as a temporary base of Yemen's internationally recognized government. Aden has seen a spate of suicide attacks and assassinations in recent months, with a number of them claimed by Islamic State.

Witnesses said that a suicide bomber rammed his car into a gathering of new recruits at the camp, reports Reuters. The targeted facility was being used by the Popular Resistance, a local militia that helped the government in driving out Houthi-rebels from the city.

The assault comes a week after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited Saudi Arabia to meet King Salman and Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir to discuss the Yemen conflict, reports Deutsche Welle. There is a consensus building on resuming peace talks with Houthi rebels, who seized the capital, Sanaa, two years back.

Yemen has been plagued by an 18-month-long conflict, which has claimed some 9,000 lives and left about 3 millions internally displaced.
