Turkey's current premier became his country's first directly-elected head of state on Sunday, sweeping the presidential election despite mounting frustration with his autocratic rule. During their call, Obama and Erdogan reportedly discussed the growing instability in Iraq and the crisis in Gaza.
Michael Wilner of the Jerusalem Post notes:
The two leaders discussed efforts to forge a cease-fire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, according to the White House, which provided no further details of the conversation.
The Associated Press reports:
The White House says Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed on the importance of closely cooperating on the situation in Iraq, as well as on Syria.
