Obama began his trip in Japan, where he affirmed U.S. support for Japan's position in a bitter territorial dispute with China, and will also visit South Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The tour is the most recent measure in the White House's so-called 'Asia pivot,' which was launched three years ago but faltered in the wake of turbulence in the Middle East.
