Havana abuzz over singer's bold concert lyrics

HAVANA (AP) — A Cuban singer's unusually bold lyrics at a nationally televised concert are the talk of Havana.

Robertico Carcasses performed late Thursday at a concert organized to demand the return of several Cuban agents imprisoned in the United States.

Carcasses also sang of his wish for more freedom of information, direct presidential elections and an end to a "self-blockade" in Cuba.

Artists, writers and musicians have long enjoyed certain flexibility to speak critically about the island's Communist system.

But Carcasses' language was unusually blunt, especially on such a high-profile stage.

Sixty-eight-year-old Diego Ferran caught the performance on TV and said Friday he could hardly believe his ears. Ferran said Carcasses was "right in everything he said."
