DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Senegal's president has removed his prime minister about a year and a half after he was chosen for the position.

President Macky Sall did not disclose a reason in announcing Abdoul Mbaye's departure on Sunday. The statement issued by a presidential spokesman only said that "the president thanks the outgoing prime minister."

A new prime minister was expected to be named soon. Mbaye, a longtime banker, had been chosen for the post right after Sall's March 2012 election victory.

Sall ousted former President Abdoulaye Wade in a presidential runoff vote and has been tasked with trying to address high levels of unemployment and a rising cost of living.
