Lonmin, the world’s third-largest platinum producer and whose Marikana mine was the site of fatal violent labor clashes in August last year, has appointed mining engineer Ben Magara (inset, above) as its new chief executive effective July 1. Magara currently runs engineering and capital projects at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) and is a director of Anglo American South Africa. Acting chief executive Simon Scott will return to being chief financial officer. Scott stepped in when former head Ian Farmer was diagnosed with a serious illness in the middle of last year.
