Sony said unexpectedly that it had made a net loss of $115 million in the third quarter, bringing its losses for the year to date to $544 million, and underscoring the challenges the Japanese consumer electronics group faces in staging a long-awaited recovery. It was the company's eighth consecutive quarterly loss as demand for TVs wanes and shoppers prefer to buy Apple and Samsung consumer electronic devices.
