In 2003, a presumptuous San Francisco dreamt of getting to zero waste by 2020, a target that now appears terribly out of reach, prompting the city to move the deadline by another 10 years.
The failure, however, shouldn’t undermine the massive progress San Francisco has made in waste management over the past few years. In 2012, the city was recycling, composting or reusing nearly 80 percent of its waste, which is far higher than the national average of 34 percent at that time, notes Wired.
