At least 100 people have died, and hundreds of others are missing after an overloaded passenger ferry capsized in the south of Lake Victoria, Tanzania on Thursday. It remains unclear how many people were aboard when the accident took place, but officials fear the number could be as high as 400 when the vessel overturned.

Thirty-seven people were rescued from the sea after the accident on Thursday, and the operations to recover the missing resumed on Friday morning after a halt overnight, reports Reuters.

The disaster brings back the haunting memories of similar accidents in the past, when a total of 345 lives were lost in two separate accidents involving Tanzanian ferries in 2011 and 2012, notes the BBC.
