Brazil’s presidential election took a bloody turn on Friday after far-right presidential hopeful, Jair Bolsonaro, sustained “grave” wounds in a knife attack during a campaign rally in the south-east state of Minas Gerais.
Bolsonaro, a highly divisive figure in the country’s politics, had surgery for injuries to his intestines and could take up to two months to recover completely, reports the BBC. The stabbing marks a “dramatic twist” in one of Brazil's most uncertain elections in decades.
Bolsonaro, the frontrunner for the presidential office, has built a strong supporter base by capitalizing on public anger and frustration over a string of corruption scandals and rising violent crimes in the country, notes The Guardian.
