Zimbabwe: Mnangagwa wins; rival rejects “fake” result

Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Nelson Chamisa dismissed the “unverified fake results” after the election commission declared President Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner of the hotly contested presidential polls on Friday.

Mnangagwa averted a run-off vote by securing just over 50 percent votes while Chamisa bagged 44.3 percent of the total 4.8m votes cast, writes The Guardian.

Chamisa’s premature declaration and celebration of his victory have raised eyebrows for stoking passions and igniting violence on the streets, a tactic that won’t succeed in the courts if his MDC Alliance fails to substantiate the allegations with hard material, as it announced to do, notes the BBC.
