World alarmed by Zimbabwe army’s post-polls crackdown

The U.N. and former colonial power the U.K. have called on Zimbabwe to exercise restraint in dealing with protesters who took to the streets against the ruling Zanu-PF party over alleged vote-rigging in Monday’s elections.

Three opposition demonstrators were killed after Zimbabwean army opened fire on protests in Harare on Wednesday, writes Reuters. Amnesty International's acting secretary general Colm O Cuanachain cautioned Zimbabwean government against “muzzling freedom of expression and the right to protest.”

Amid international calls to restore peace and calm in the aftermath of a historic election, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said he is in touch with opposition leader Nelson Chamisa to defuse the tensions, notes the BBC.
